VNC Setup

The Remote client


This is a guide to show how to setup VNC on a client computer so you are able to troubleshoot it remotely from anywhere.

Client System Setup:
> Give the client PC a static IP Address or an IP reservation through WINS
> Download Tight VNC HERE
  - Download the version that applies to the client’s system
> Execute the download to start installing VNC
  - Leave all option as default during install. Very simple a quick install
> Download my simple REMOTE.CMD
  - This will start TightVNC Server
    * No pop-ups, just starts and shows running in bottom right of your desktop
  - Also opens a browser window showing the clients external IP
  - Only works on Windows
> Configure VNC Server by double clicking the icon in bottom right of your desktop
  - Server Tab
    * “Incoming Connections” section
      + Check “Accept socket connections”
      + Enter password to be used when connecting
    * “Display or port number to use” section
      + Select “Ports” buttom
      + Enter a (main) port number from 5901 to 5999
      + Enter an (HTTP) port number from 5801 to 5899
  - Click OK

Client Router Setup:
    Most Linksys Routers
> Login you the client’s Router
  - Open a web browser and enter http:// before your router’s IP address
    * If you do not know your router IP, find it HERE
  - Enter your User Name and Password and click OK
> Go to the “Security” Link at the lop of the page
  - Uncheck “Block Anonymous Internet Requests”
  - Save Settings
> Click “Applications and Gaming” Link at the top of the page
  - On the 1st entry
    * Enter an application name like “VNC1”, it’s just a name
    * Enter the same Port number in the Start and End bos
      + Same port numbers chosen on client setup
    * Enter the IP Address of the client computer that has those port numbers set
  - You will enter a separate entry for the Main and Http port number of each client
  - Click the Save Settings button at the bottom of the page

Administrator Setup and Connect:
> Download Tight VNC to the Administrator’s system HERE
  - Download the version that applies to your system
> Execute the download to start installing VNC
  - Leave all option as default
> Make sure that the client computer has TightVNC running and knows the external IP address using the REMOTE.CMD tool
> Accessing the client PC via TightVNC Viewer
  - Enter the external IP Address with last 2 digits of the port number of the destination client
  - Example:  “192.168.55.101:5” for client IP 192.168.55.101 with port 5905
> Accessing the client with Web Browser
  - Enter the external IP Address with all 4 digits of the port number of the destination client
  - Example:  “http://192.168.55.101:5805” for client IP 192.168.55.101 with port 5805
